Transportation:

Best way to get around-

Buses are a great way to get around Mexico. They're just about in every city and can take you locally or from city to city. Buses are typically only recommended for shorter distance trips and you might want to look into flights if traveling from state to state. Check out VivaAerobus for cheap flights around Mexico. Taxis are also common in Mexico but can get expensive if you're planning on doing a lot of traveling around. We were surprised to NOT find Uber in many of the touristy beach towns.

Safety:

While it is often thought that Mexico isn't the safest place to travel to, there are plenty of places in Mexico to go to where safety isn't a concern at all. Actually, this is the case in most places in Mexico! Be sure to be aware of petty theft and purse snatching and you'll be fine. As always, make sure to survey the scene whenever you're in a new place and if it looks sketchy, stay away! The majority of the crimes that we hear about are the big things happening between officials and the drug cartels... all of which you're not bound to run into.

Budget:

  1. backpacker avg. $50
  2. comfortable avg. $80
  3. luxury avg. $300+

Language:

Spanish is the language spoken in Mexico. Many indigenous people in southern Mexico (especially in the Yucatan peninsula) speak Mayan. No... Mexican is not a language. It’s also not a bad word. It’s literally the name used to describe people born in Mexico.

    When To Visit:

For optimal weather, we recommend heading to Mexico from December to April. This is when the weather is dry, but the beaches offer breezes. If trying to steer clear of tourists, you'll want to head there during the rainy season which runs from June to October but really only affects the central and southern areas. Keeping towards the northern coastal areas during this time will give you awesome weather and less busy beaches.

    What To Eat:

If you don't like Mexican food, you're wrong. Mexico offers such an array of the most delicious food that won't cost you an arm and a leg! Check out the street food for the best deals or treat yourself to a nice authentic seafood meal in a beachside town. Try all of the mole sauces and tamales. You won't regret it.

If trying to stick to a budget, Airbnb and hostels are going to be your best choice. There are plenty of cheap options out there that still offer comfortable accommodations. Have a bit more leniency in the budget? Check out some of the incredible resorts that Mexico has to offer. It won't give you the most authentic experience, but it will give you access to relaxation and great pools.

    What to Pack:

If from the United States, no power adapters will be necessary when traveling to Mexico. Traveling with a universal power adapter is always recommended, though, just in case! Mexico is hot but is chilly during the nights. Be sure to pack layers especially if planning on heading into the more mountainous areas of Mexico. For easy organization and to optimize space, we recommend picking up a set of travel compression cubes. Check them out at Tripped Travel Gear!
