What to do in Koh Lanta Thailand - Cave Tour
Khao Mai Kaew Cave (Maikaew Cave) in Koh Lanta Thailand was one of the best things we did while on holiday. The tour was about 2 hours long and cost 300 baht at the time. The tour outfit provides a guide (which you REALLY need) as well as a headlamp of surprisingly high quality.
How to get there
Khao Mai Kaew Cave (Maikaew Cave) is listed as one of the top Things to Do in Ko Lanta, Thailand. The best way to get to the tour is to take a rented scooter there. You don't need to reserve a spot ahead of time- tours leave every hour (not necessarily on the hour though).
What to expect
The cave tour begins with a 30 minute trek through the jungle, up ladders, and scaling vertical rocks to get to the cave entrance. Its a workout. Entering the cave is cool in itself- there is literally a gaping maw into the earth hidden behind a large boulder. You scale a ladder into the depths and can kiss daylight goodbye.
Your guide will show you sweet spots to make super bass footsteps, he'll introduce you to bats, a large cave chamber, and finally lead you through a claustrophobic tunnel on your hands and knees.
Cave Tour Requirements
This tour requires a certain level of physical fitness. You are going to have to work and sweat to get the most out of tour. The reward is one of the most hands-on caving experiences you can have. We've done cave tours in Slovenia, Croatia, Vietnam and the United States, and this particular one stands out as being one of the physical and interesting.
No guide-rails here! Watch your step and don't fall in any pits.
